What you can do

1. Watch out for Waste Management tricks! A petition paid for by Waste Management is being circulated in the 10 th Ward. Circulators say, “Sign a petition for a new park in our community.” They don’t mention 5 more years of landfilling! They are being paid as much as $20 for a page of 15 signatures.

2. E-mail or call your alderman to thank him/her for City Council’s unanimous vote to renew the moratorium, and to alert him/her to watch for any move that Waste Management may be organizing to undermine the moratorium and get the deal they want for 5 more years and 6 million more tons of garbage dumped on us. Your alderman’s name may be obtained at www.cityofchicago.org.

3. Stay informed! Come to meetings, read about the effects of landfills and learn more about alternative waste technologies.

We have available a report on health problems of people living near landfills by Peter Montague, of the Environmental Research Foundation, publisher of Rachel’s Environmental & Health Weekly. To receive a copy of this report, or for more information about Citizens for Landfill Alternatives and our next meeting date, call (773) 646-0436 or e-mail Marian Byrnes.
